Why we're Green
Through New Leaf’s mission of supporting our communities, the Envirotokens program started in 1993 rewards customers who make the sustainable choice to reuse bags and keep single-use items out of local landfills. When you shop at New Leaf and bring your own reusable bags, we give you a 10¢ Envirotoken per bag. The customer then pays it forward to one of six local nonprofits hand-selected for doing important work in our area, with a focus in K-12 education efforts, hunger relief and environmental stewardship. Since starting, the program has diverted over 13.5 million bags out of local landfills and saved the equivalent to 20,000 trees through the use of reusable grocery bags. In April 2021, New Leaf eliminated single-use still water bottles in sizes smaller than one liter, including plastic, fiber, aluminum or glass containers. In doing so, New Leaf estimates that by making this change, over 70,000 single-use bottles will be removed from circulation from the six stores alone.
